Content and conversational design
My goal at Oracle was simple (and complex): to work toward a less soul-hurting experience for Oracle’s products.
Voice and tone
Aligning the conversational experiences for 5 of Oracle’s core products requires close attention to personality and tone.
I created a digital assistant persona that outlined the broad-stroke personality and tone considerations for all conversational user interfaces at Oracle.
Examples and guidance provided writers, designers, and anyone tasked with evaluating copy the ability to make connections more easily.
Error messages
In an ideal world, users would never encounter error messages. In reality, strong content design can minimize the perception of a negative experience.
Establishing a syntactical and informational architecture for conversational error messages made content development for error messages scalable, consistent, and less painful.
I eventually shared this strategy in an article on The UX Collective titled Error state stasis: a quick visit to the syntax of an error message.
Conversational design
Conversational mapping provides a bird’s-eye view of paths throughout a conversational experience.
A simple Help script in a conversational experience can represent dozens of conditions, processes, and contextual user states. There are four unique levels of help in the dialog flow to the left.
Going from dialog flows to script development requires a different type of content tool. This table provides a source of truth and shared workspace for writers, designers, developers, and product managers to quickly iterate on copy prior to release.
Collaboration
Working in design tools like Figma allows me to get a seat at the design table.
This high fidelity mockup shows a unique combination of a graphic and conversational user interfaces, requiring a close eye on point of view – can you spot the content design consideration here?
You guessed it, I wrote an article on Medium on the topic of POV in user interfaces.
